Overview
Norway has two Elkhounds and the Black is the lighter and rarer. It was bred to track moose through forest, hold the animal at bay and bark for the hunter, which explains a lot about its voice. The coat is dense and jet black, the tail curls over the back, and the whole dog gives an impression of coiled alertness.
Spitz breeds are independent thinkers and this one is no exception. It bonds hard with its family, is wary of strangers until it has decided about them, and will tell you about anything unusual. For a walker that means a dog that is interesting, tough and not always inclined to agree with you.
Exercise and walking needs
Around ninety minutes a day keeps a Black Elkhound content, split between a long walk and a shorter one. They have real stamina and cope with cold, wet and snow far better than most dogs you walk.
They enjoy hills, rough ground and forest tracks. Flat pavement is tolerated rather than enjoyed, so vary the route and let the dog use its nose.
On the walk
- Recall: Variable. The breed hunts by scent and sight and the chase instinct runs deep. Deer, rabbits and squirrels can switch recall off completely.
- Barking: Expect it. Elkhounds bark at other dogs, at people, at noises and at nothing. It is a breed trait rather than aggression, but it draws attention.
- Other dogs: Confident, sometimes to the point of arrogance. Same-sex scuffles are not unusual, so manage introductions and read the body language.
- Heat: The dense coat makes warm days hard work. In summer walk early, keep to shade and carry water.
Tips for professional walkers
- Bring a long line for open spaces; it lets the dog range without you relying on a recall that may not hold.
- Reward quiet behaviour around triggers rather than trying to shout over the barking.
- Check the coat for burrs and ticks after forest walks; the thick undercoat hides them.
- Vary the route. A bored Elkhound makes its own entertainment.
What to ask the owner
- How reactive is the dog to deer, cats and other wildlife, and has it ever gone missing on a scent?
- Does the dog bark at other dogs on lead, and how does the owner manage it?
- Is the dog relaxed with children and strangers approaching on a walk?
