Overview
The American Staffordshire Terrier, or Amstaff, was separated from the Pit Bull in the 1930s and bred to a show standard, producing a stockier, broader-headed dog. Temperament is typically confident, outgoing and extremely fond of people, with a stubborn streak and a lot of physical power.
It is not on the UK banned list, but prohibition is judged by physical type rather than pedigree, and some Amstaffs match the Pit Bull description. Ask the owner about the dog's status and whether a vet or the police have ever raised the question. Check your insurance covers the breed.
Exercise and walking needs
Ninety minutes a day, split between a brisk walk and some hard play, keeps the breed settled. They love tug, flirt poles and short sprints. Stamina is moderate; they are powerlifters, not marathon runners.
Heat builds quickly in that much muscle. Shift walks to early and late in summer and carry water.
On the walk
- Pulling: Very strong for the size, with a low centre of gravity. A front-clip harness and a sturdy lead are the minimum.
- Other dogs: Some are sociable, many are selective, and a few are not safe with other dogs at all. Take the owner's word and err on the side of distance.
- Greetings: A dog this friendly launches itself at people. Teach a calm approach and keep it off children unless invited.
- Prey: Cats and small animals may trigger a chase. Keep the lead on near gardens and farms.
Tips for professional walkers
- Use the walk for structured training as well as exercise; these dogs enjoy a job and settle better for it.
- Avoid narrow paths where face-to-face meetings with unknown dogs are unavoidable.
- Keep a towel in the van; the short coat dries fast but the dog will have rolled in something.
- Check for skin irritation after grassy walks, as allergies are common in the breed.
What to ask the owner
- Has the dog's type ever been questioned under the Dangerous Dogs Act, and is it insured for a professional walker?
- How does it behave with other dogs, and which dogs or routes should you avoid?
- Any skin allergies or joint issues, and how does it cope with warm weather?
